Columns

We manufacture columns and column-like apparatus for industrial separation processes. Tall structures are manufactured with defined alignment and documented dimensional control. Internals and steel structures can be incorporated, as can segmentation suitable for transport.

Alignment and dimensional control throughout the entire column

For containers with great heights, the alignment of the segments is critical for assembly and operation. We check the alignment during manufacturing and document the final 3D as-built measurements. Wind and seismic loads are taken into account in the structural design as needed.

Manufacturing and Assembly Preparation

Columns up to 5 m in diameter and 50 m in length

We manufacture compact units as well as large columns segmented for transport according to customer specifications. Material traceability, dimensional inspection, and the agreed-upon tests are documented throughout the entire order.

Dimensions up to 5 m in diameter and 150 t

Columns can be manufactured with diameters up to 5 m and in single-piece lengths up to 50 m. Individual weights of up to 150 t and wall thicknesses of up to 100 mm are possible. For transportation and installation, production can be planned in multiple segments. We evaluate non-standard dimensions and special materials on a project-by-project basis.

Internal components and additional services

We manufacture column internals such as trays, packing supports, and liquid distributors according to project-specific designs. Droplet separators, demisters, and other support internals can be assembled at the factory. Platforms, ladders, and pipe supports are included in the scope of delivery upon request. Coating, fire protection, insulation, as well as drying and preservation are performed as appropriate for the specific application.

Review and Documentation

In-house quality assurance (QA)

Our quality assurance team inspects production in-house. The specified testing procedures and 3D measurements are defined on a project-by-project basis. Our documentation team compiles material certificates, manufacturing records, and test results into comprehensive project documentation.

Mechanical design of the column

We perform calculations according to AD 2000 and EN 13445 using Sant’Ambrogio NextGen 2025; ASME analyses are performed using Compress 2025. Wind and seismic loads are accounted for as part of the applicable load case. For complex analyses, we use ANSYS Mechanical. Design is performed in PTC Creo.

Materials

Materials suitable for the cutting process

Carbon steels: P265GH, P355GH, P355NH, P355NL1, 16Mo3, 13CrMo4-5, 10CrMo9-10, 15NiCuMoNb5-6-4, SA-516 Gr. 60/70, SA-350 LF2, and SA-387 Gr. 11.

Stainless steels: 1.4301, 1.4541, 1.4571, 1.4539, and the corresponding SA-240 grades.

Duplex steels: 1.4462 and SA-240 318LN. We evaluate cladding options for corrosive media.

Important Information About Our Columns

Here we answer technical questions regarding the manufacturing, internals, and logistics of columns.

What column internals does WOLF supply and install? +

The scope of production may include column trays, packing supports, and liquid distributors. Droplet separators, demisters, and collection and redistribution systems are also available. The internals are manufactured according to customer specifications or assembled at the plant using customer-supplied components.

How does WOLF organize the transport of large columns? +

Large columns can be divided into segments for transport. We plan heavy-haul and oversized transport in collaboration with specialized logistics partners from our plants in Wilnsdorf and Herdorf. The necessary route permits and transport dimensions are taken into account. The exact scope of services is defined in the project.

How does WOLF ensure the dimensional accuracy of large columns? +

The geometry of the column is captured in 3D using laser measurement technology. We document the alignment along the entire length of the structure. In segmented manufacturing, the measurement data is used to prepare the connection areas and the subsequent assembly.

How is the appropriate column type selected for a process? +

The selection is based on the required separation capacity, the permissible pressure drop, and the throughput. The available installation space and operational behavior are also taken into account. Based on this process data, it is determined whether a bottom-fed, packed bed, or packed column is suitable.
